Hydroseeding Care by Grassland Hydroseed Ltd.

Watering Your New Lawn

Hold off on watering your newly applied hydroseed for the first 24 – 48 hrs, until it’s completely dry. The hydroseed will turn from dark green to light green. It will feel firm and hold your weight when completely dry. Once dry, begin irrigation. You are growing a lawn from seed with the added benefits of hydroseeding mulches, soil conditioners, soil binders and amendments. The hydroseed with its great water holding capacity will speed up germination and prevent erosion.

Irrigation Cycles

Keep the hydroseed moist, not soggy. The seeds need both heat and moisture to germinate. Overly wet conditions keep the seeds cool and the seeds may rot and fail to germinate. Look at the hydroseed, let it shift into a lighter colour (no need to have the hydroseed go completely dry) before adding more water. Think of frequent, light, spring showers.

For optimum germination, use frequent, short irrigation cycles. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Factors like air temperatures, soil temperatures, wind conditions, sun exposure, open landscapes or wooded landscapes all play a role. We recommend spending the first week fine-tuning your irrigation system.

Permanent Irrigation System

Start with 2 – 3 irrigation cycles each day, each lasting 5 minutes per zone. If the hydroseed feels too dry, add another cycle instead of extending the duration per zone. Gradually increase the duration only if necessary.

Temporary Irrigation System

A simple system using tripods or sprinklers will suffice. Timers are ideal, but phone reminders will work too. Aim for 1 – 2 irrigation sessions daily; germination will simply take a longer, but the lawn will still establish evenly.

No Irrigation System

Consider customizing your seed mixture with fast-germinating and drought- tolerant species if relying solely on rainfall. Patience is key, as your lawn will emerge more slowly.

Germination Timeline

With a permanent irrigation system, expect a young lawn by week 8 and a fully enjoyable one by week 12. Once your lawn takes shape, reduce irrigation frequency to encourage deeper root growth, making it more disease-resistant. Aim for 2 – 3 irrigation cycles per week, each lasting 15 minutes, preferably in the early morning. (1 inch of water per week is recommended for the following season) Be easy on your lawn the first season.

Fertilization and Mowing

Fertilize 6 – 8 weeks after seeding, when the grass is shifting into a light green and then again in the fall before the first frost. Mow the grass when it reaches a height 4 – 6 inches preferable with push mower (light mower) set high (4 inches). Maintain a mowing height of 3 inches

Weed Control

Wait at least 3 months (or the entire first season) before using any chemical weed treatments. Opt for a weed trimmer to manage weeds. Annual weeds can benefit your new lawn by retaining moisture and shading young seedlings. They disappear with the first mowing. Perennial weeds like Canada Thistle require a different approach as they are invasive.
